Richard is unique among paddlers in that he has excelled in both short and long distances. He has placed top 5 in the World in both C-1 200m and C-2 36km events. He started competing in Marathon Canoe and won silver at the 2000 World Championships in Dartmouth. He soon transitioned to sprint canoe and qualified for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens where he finished 6th in both the C-1 500m and C-2 1000m events.
