Mark was born in Calgary but moved to Halifax in his youth, where he got his start in paddling to be able to hang out with his friends. He studies Civil Engineering at Dalhousie University. Mark is unable to train in Florida in the winter due to his studies and thus can be found paddling in the Atlantic Ocean while the lakes are still frozen.
