Opening Ceremonies |
Prince Albert Road, Dartmouth
Opening ceremonies will begin with a parade of flags to welcome each of the countries to Canoe ’09. The parade will take place on the water and flags will be paddled down the lake in canoes to the sound of live native drum music performed by the Sons of Membertou. Artist Holly Carr will be onstage during the opening ceremonies to paint a silk canvas. She will take her inspiration from the native drum music and her finished painting will reflect the spirit of Canoe ’09. Opening remarks will be made and the ICF and Canadian flags will be raised. The Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra will preform the ICF anthem and the Canadian National Anthem. After the official opening, spectators will be treated to an entertainment showcase by “Rhythms of Nova Scotia” created by the producers of DRUM! This spectacular musical performance will include musicians, dancers, drummers, and singers from the four principal cultures of Nova Scotia. Aboriginal, African Nova Scotian, Celtic, and Acadian cultures will be brought together in a heart-pumping fusion of music, dance, poetry, video, rhythm, and song. The evening will finish off with an extravagant fireworks display supported by the Alexander Keith’s Natal Day Committee. Bookmark and Share -

Rhythms of Nova Scotia |

The performance unfolds as one heart-pumping combination of music, dance, poetry, video, rhythm and song. Acadian washboards, Celtic fiddles and bagpipes, Aboriginal drums and sultry black voices come together to celebrate FOUR CULTURES….. FOUR RHYTHMS…..ONE HEART. -

Todd Labrador – Canoe Building Demonstration |
Prince Albert Road, Dartmouth
Todd Labrador is a skilled builder of authentic Mi’kmaq birch bark canoes. He will be onsite demonstrating the process of building a birch bark canoe. -

Iceberg Exotics |
Prince Albert Road, Dartmouth
With over 25 years experience this group brings different reptiles from around the world for an education and fun reptile show. The animals and their countries of origin will be explained to the audience followed by a Q& A period. The audience will get the touch and hold all the animals from tarantulas to frogs to a 12’ python. -

A Pig’s Jig - Clowns |
Prince Albert Road, Dartmouth
A Pig’s Jig is a local team of two clowns who will mingle through the crowd, entertaining with pocket magic, balloons, puppets, coloring pages, one on one jokes and goofiness. The clowns will be on-site after the noon hour to entertain children. -

We will feature four different animated, athletic, acrobatic and carnival style performers. All performers either are from Nova Scotia or have strong ties to Nova Scotia and can be featured as local talent. Featured Performers: Alex Elixir, Cam Flemming, Ryan Whalen, Jeff Collins. -

Pogo Performance – Daniel Mahoney |
Prince Albert Road, Dartmouth
Daniel, raised in Truro, Nova Scotia recently appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres show. He has also been a performer at the Nova Scotia Tattoo festival and the Halifax Busker festival with his original Pogo act. Daniel defies gravity as he flips, grabs and spins on a pogo stick with his high-energy act. Daniel has a strong fan base through youtube and he's considered one of the top pogoers out there today. -

The festival will open early with food and merchandise vendors.There will also be the Children’s Zone that will offer a number of activities and games for very young children, including bouncy castles, slides, face painting, balloon art, colouring contests, clowns and magic. Friday August 14th

Lifesaving Society Demonstration |
Lake Banook
The Lifesaving Society will be onsite to do lifesaving demonstrations and provide information on water safety. These activities will be performed on land and in the water. The demonstrations will take place in the water over the noon hour period. They will also have a booth set-up for the day and provide information on water safety. -

Slimy Science – Discovery Centre Show |

Want to just ‘make a mess’? Expect the unexpected as we get slimy exploring chemical and physical changes in some everyday substances. Chemistry is taken to its slimiest, coolest form! The hands-on table will be on-going throughout the day and kids can take home some slime! -

Concert on the Lake |
Entertainment Stage, Lake Banook
Matt Mays will headline ‘Concert on the Lake’. Mays grew up locally and his band’s music and stage performance is a perfect match for the high-energy sport of paddling. Canadian rocker Jon Mullane will open the show. Concert on the Lake is meant to thank and recognize the fan base, volunteers, and other supporters of Canoe ’09. -

Street magic – Ben Proudfoot |
Prince Albert Road, Dartmouth
Ben Proudfoot is a young Canadian magician born in Halifax, Nova Scotia. His show combines original innovations with classic favorites that will both entertain and amaze. In 2005, Ben entered Canada's national magic competition, held by The Canadian Association of Magicians where he was named the best Close-Up Magician in Canada under the age of eighteen. Ben will perform street magic throughout the crowd amazing his audience with his sleight of hand magic and his close-up manipulations. -

To promote safe boating this summer the Office of Boating Safety will be traveling throughout the Maritimes. The will be set-up each day with a display trailer staffed by boating safety students who will be available to answer questions related to safe boating and can provide information to boaters of all ages. They will also have tattoos and activity books for kids. -

One of the regulars on the street performer circuit for the past 20 years, Alex is originally from Chester, N.S. but has been living on the West Coast for most of his life. Alex is a juggler and physical comedian. He has the ability to draw huge crowds of onlookers, playfully involving them in his amazing and entertaining act that sees him juggling five lit torches, balancing circus balls and several other stunts. -

Official Closing Ceremony with remarks from the ICF President, the Presidents of the National Federation of Current and next World Championships and the Commodore of CanoeKayak Canada finished with the lowering of the ICF flag. -
