Opening Ceremonies
-
Opening ceremonies will begin with a parade of flags to welcome each of the countries to Canoe ’09. The parade will take place on the water and flags will be paddled down the lake in canoes to the sound of live native drum music performed by the Sons of Membertou. Artist Holly Carr will be onstage during the opening ceremonies to paint a silk canvas. She will take her inspiration from the native drum music and her finished painting will reflect the spirit of Canoe ’09. Opening remarks will be made and the ICF and Canadian flags will be raised. The Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra will preform the ICF anthem and the Canadian National Anthem. After the official opening, spectators will be treated to an entertainment showcase by “Rhythms of Nova Scotia” created by the producers of DRUM! This spectacular musical performance will include musicians, dancers, drummers, and singers from the four principal cultures of Nova Scotia. Aboriginal, African Nova Scotian, Celtic, and Acadian cultures will be brought together in a heart-pumping fusion of music, dance, poetry, video, rhythm, and song. The evening will finish off with an extravagant fireworks display supported by the Alexander Keith’s Natal Day Committee. Bookmark and Share
